Atheist Formed by a Cloud of Space Dust:
An Atheist Pondering His Origins

“An Atheist Pondering His Origins” – in this video I share an insight I had about how I formed from a cloud of space dust over some 5 billion years.

In addition I note the stark difference between this vision of my origins provided by science and that offered by religions.

From dust to dust… some power in the universe organizes me, and then disperses me, with time being one of the primary factors.

Recently I was thinking about the following facts:

* The solar system was created about 5 billion years ago starting with a cloud of space dust
* Life started on earth no later than 3.4 billion years ago
* Our species appeared no earlier than 200,000 years ago

I had this image of a cloud of dust in space morphing into me sitting here at the computer… and thought “strange that a cloud of dust in space could form into a person thinking and reflecting on itself and it’ s place in the universe”…

There is a power in the universe, some sort of organizing power which can pull a large cloud of dust together and, through a set of simple laws, form a human being who can think and dream.

That power is seen now as a set of organizing physical laws that combines with time to produce increasingly complex, self conscious organisms.

Only the interval of time was needed, along with a few simple physical laws.

These kinds of insights are what lead a person to feel that there is something more to the universe than just atoms and simple physical laws.

It is possible that we are just projecting ourselves out onto what we see in the universe… but the feeling of there being “more” is a very deep one within human beings.

There is a magnificence in thinking about these facts, realizing the stunning magnitude and improbability of all of this arising out of nothing, for no reason.

Perhaps we “feel” a sort of presence organizing the universe because we are feeling an intuition that WE are also part of the organic whole.

You and I are part of the mystery and paradox.

It is helpful to remember, this view of ourselves and our place in the universe is only made possible by science.

Religion did not have this image or concept available.

Though sitting at the computer today and contemplating my place and my origins,
I also realize that one day I will have evaporated back into the cosmic dust.

My collection of atoms will once again disassemble and disperse back into a cloud of space dust.

Only time separates me from that inevitable fate.

So, to summarize, I had this image of this cloud of space dust just morphing over time, slowly but surely… and eventually… here I am!

Thanks for listening!
