ATHEISM – Dictionary.com definition:

1. the doctrine or belief that there is no God.
2. disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

Nothing to Offer –
The Emptiness of Atheism

As atheists, when we lack a belief in a god or gods, and we interact with someone who is a believer… we have nothing to offer in the place of their belief.

There is nothing in atheism that replaces the hole left by a belief that has been destroyed or eliminated.

We can tear down the belief system… we can change someone’s mind away from their belief, but as atheists we have nothing to offer in return.

No Larger Meaning –
The Emptiness of Atheism

Atheism means a lack of belief in a personal god or gods… and in any supernatural powers.

If you follow this out and think about the implications of this, you will see that this also means that there is no LARGER or ULTIMATE “purpose” or “meaning” to life. This video addresses these issues, including answering the two main objections I hear to this proposition.

There seems to me to be no place in atheism for a larger, ultimate meaning to life, and this is a consequence of what I am calling the “emptiness of atheism”.

“No Personal Magic” –
The Emptiness of Atheism

A world without god or gods, or supernatural powers – rules out any magical personal experiences – because magic is defined as “having or apparently having supernatural powers”.

There is a kind of “emptiness”, in living a life where there are no supernatural powers speaking to you or exhibiting itself to you personally… events just happen, but without any special personal magic or meaning in a larger sense.

So, one of the prices we pay as atheists… one of the areas I am calling the “emptiness of atheism”, is in giving up the idea and feelings of having personal magic happening to us and around us.

“The Hero Savior of Vietnam” –
The Burden of Proof

This is a story I found on the internet, by Richard Carrier. It was included in his article “Why I Am Not a Christian” (2006).

I though it was worth sharing because of its relevance to “the burden of proof” for evaluating extraordinary claims, and extraordinary stories.
(Note: this is not my story, but is from Richard Carrier.)

Atheist Video One Million and One
(… but this one is different!)

I am going to talk about some things not covered much on the internet… the emptiness of atheism, and the lack in atheism.

The emotional emptiness / The the lack of answers / The gnawing unknown.

These negatives are part of atheism… but as an agnostic atheist, the so-called positive feelings of religious belief are not an option open to me.

The Angry Atheist Myth

A minority of atheists might be “angry atheists”, but the majority are not. This video talks about the Myth of the Angry Atheist.

Does Atheism Deny God? –
“Yes, It Should!”

This video makes a case for atheists to actively deny god, rather than just claim “there isn’t enough evidence”.

The distinction between weak atheism and strong atheism is noted, and as an example, the book by Victor Stenger “God, the Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist” is also noted.

This is the 3rd and last video in the series “Does Atheism Deny God?”.

Does Atheism Deny God? –
“Atheist’s Internal Squabbles”

Does Atheism Deny God? – “Atheist’s Internal Squabbles” This video is about the debate among atheists whether atheism is a “belief”, or a “disbelief”.

Some atheists claim that the “burden of proof” shifts to the atheist if we label atheism a belief.

I put forward the position that this debate is irrelevant in the world of believers, and a kind of “tempest in a teapot” amongst atheists.

Since atheists can’t prove there is no god, and believers can’t prove there is – then atheists should just take on the claims of believers directly.

This is the second in a short series of videos titled
“Does Atheism Deny God?”

Does Atheism Deny God? –
“Definitions of Atheism”

Is atheism a “disbelief” or a “belief”?

Some definitions are presented here, along with info on Negative (weak) atheism and Positive (strong) atheism.
